Lewis Nixon
Waterpark Team Leader
“I started here in 2003 as a lifeguard. After about 11 months I was promoted to head lifeguard, and then given the Team Leader position, which I have held for around two years now. My next goal is to become a Team Manager.
From one side of the experience to the other
“I'd always enjoyed coming to Alton Towers; it's such a massive attraction with so many opportunities that I thought it would be great fun and bubbly place to work, and that I'd meet some great people. And while it's all of that, it's also very challenging! But I see that as a positive thing.
“Running my day-to-day shift involves planning rotations, ensuring the lifeguards are doing their jobs correctly and that they get proper breaks. Before the waterpark opens we have to ensure it is clean and safe. The days are hectic, but generally fun.
“It sounds like a lot of responsibility, but I'm working in a fantastic team, meeting lots of different people and running a waterpark that is regarded as one of the best in the U.K. The team morale is excellent; we have a lot of team nights out together and everyone's very easy to get on with. We all support each other 100%: if other departments need help we always we do what we can, and they'll do the same for us.
Responsibility and recognition
“Working with the public, you're constantly aware of the difference you can make to their day. It's not just about ensuring their safety – but also remembering that how we treat them and talk to them can make a real impact on their enjoyment.
“If I had to pick one real outstanding moment, I'd say it would have to be winning the Team of the Year award. It was an awesome achievement, and we celebrated it in real style!”
